It would be difficult to understand why we are here unless you understood how we got here. Cradles and Crayons was built out of a passion that we had for our children and their upbringing. Like all mothers, our biggest necessity has been ensuring that our children develop in the best environment that we can provide; our biggest asset, attention to detail.
My Story - Mama Mungai
Most parents take time out for a few months on maternal or paternal leave to start their parenting years and then go back to work. Well, that was the same case for me only that my time from my first born son, Mungai was a little different. Mungai is a special needs child, he has Cerebral Palsy.
After Mungai was born, I went back to work expecting that my childcare option was adequate enough. However, I quickly realised that this would not work and I quit my job to become a full time mom. Since then, I have done transport for my daughter Shiko and some of her schoolmates. My decision to start a daycare came about after the birth of my second daughter Mumbua. Being around children so much made me attentive to their needs and how to interact with them on their level of understanding. It has been a tough journey, one that has seen me lose Mungai but I believe his life inspired all that we have today.
My Story - Mama Naeemah
As parents, we have all been there; the lack of proper supervision of your little ones to the uncertainty of your child care provider or even the constant worry / lack of peace of mind - when away from home - as to whether your child(ren) are being cared for properly, the list is endless. For me the tales spin from the precarious situations that Nannies have left me to their lack of connection with my little Naeemah. This left me trawling Nairobi for reliable daycares. Some of which were too far to be reliable. The concept of a pure daycare centre is grossly misunderstood in our region. Some few learning establishments offer ‘daycare solutions’ that according to me, are just too intense and detatched for toddlers. I will not lie, starting a daycare was the last thing on my mind, a few years ago but going through all that I have with my daughter has made me realize how passionate I am about how children are cared for. It's not about what works for my child anymore but also about what suits me as a parent.
The people making it happen behind the scenes, including us.
Our staff is dedicated towards spending ample time getting to know each and every child so that the attention and encouragement they receive is instinctive.
We place great value on participation, good manners, kindness and consideration for others, placing ourselves as key role models for them.
