A couple of weeks back we booked an appointment with Nairobi City County’s Public Health Department. We were due for our annual inspection. What normally happens during the inspection is a Public Health Officer of the said department visits the business premises then writes a report as to whether you meet the standards they have set for your area of business. If you meet the standards set, the Department issues your business with a Public Health Certificate. If however you don’t qualify, they take further action on the business. The inspection focuses mainly on the general cleanliness of the business premises, its staff and the terms and conditions given for the business to be operational.
If you run a business in Nairobi you must be aware of the jitters we were facing. Mama Mungai and I (Mama Naeemah), run a Daycare (Cradles and Crayons Daycare) in Nairobi’s Langata area. As we deal solely with little children, our line of business is very very sensitive.
We opened the Daycare almost a year ago and one of the key things we chose to never compromise on is the quality of the standards we offer. We have since then worked really hard to maintain and if possible improve our standards. This however did little to reassure us as the rumors that corruption in the County Offices is rampant was giving us sleepless nights!
The date of the inspection arrived. Unfortunately the Officer got held up elsewhere and was unable to visit the Daycare. He however postponed the inspection and promised to visit another day. He however did not confirm on the date of the next visit.
It therefore came as such a surprise when he arrived at the Daycare the very next day! As we are always on our toes with regards the general upkeep of the Daycare, we welcomed him in wholeheartedly. We took him for a tour of the premises and answered all the questions he had. He seemed very impressed with our responses and many of the actions we have put in place at the Daycare. Within no time the inspection was done. What really motivated us was his claim that Cradles and Crayons Daycare was one of the best Childcare facilities he had visited. He, without hesitation, gave us a glowing comment in our Visitor Book (see pic) and our Public Health Certificate.
We as Cradles and Crayons Daycare would like to commend Bwana Kipchilat for the professionalism he extended to us. We had heard horrid tales about County Officers and were hesitant at first. He put our hearts and business at ease. We guess it also pays that we met and quite possibly [we hope :-)] surpassed the standards set. Asante!
